In Myanmar, you will have to walk really long and hard to find someone who’s ever voted in a political election more than 3 times in their whole lives. That’s right. Most of us were raised under a governing system in which we had absolutely no voice regardless of how unhappy we were. To change that, lives were sacrificed, families were ripped apart, hearts were broken.
And today, we are lucky enough to have voted in a general election that forms a civilian government in the country. While it may not be the completely perfect democracy system in place, we are getting there. This vote is for our present, for our future and for the lives we lost along the way.
