We have once again entered the month of resistance, marking the pivotal events of August 1988, when the entire nation took to the streets to protest against the dictatorship. Countless lives were sacrificed, and yet there was no immediate, tangible outcome that was favorable or remotely positive to the public. However, looking back, we can recognize that this was the foundation upon which the Spring Revolution stands strong today.
Unfortunately, the families of those who participated in the 1988 protests have been denied the opportunity to honor, remember, and celebrate their sacrifices throughout the successive military regimes. These generations have faced discrimination, harsh treatment, and silencing for their involvement in that historic political struggle.
We hope that starting next year, the generations of student leaders, activists, and the families of those who sacrificed their lives under the military dictatorships will finally have the chance to openly reflect on, take pride in, and commemorate their loved ones’ and their own achievements in their homeland, without fear of repercussions.
