Freedom Memoirs (Vol. 3, Issue. 7)

Successive Myanmar military generals are often ridiculed for being superstitious. But their fear of number eight has valid reasons. 35 years ago in August, millions of people from all walks of life took the streets to protest against the military dictatorship, later known as the 8888 uprising. To this day, we are still inspired and moved by the sacrifices people made back then, which laid out the foundation for the future generations. As such, the generals are intimidated by the number eight and impose excessive security and oppression every year August approaches. Rightly so, Min Aung Hlaing and the former dictators must be having nightmares how they will repay all the crimes they committed on Myanmar people over the years. August reminds them of bloodshed, deaths and people’s persistence. August reminds them of the ultimate price  they must repay. August reminds them of their inevitable downfall.
