The World Bank’s report on the economic situation in East Asia and the Pacific, including Myanmar, indicates a challenging outlook for the country. Myanmar’s GDP growth rate is anticipated to be only 2% in 2024. The regime announced that it had begun a pilot census in 20 townships across the country. The statement said that the junta would conduct a census from Oct 1 to 15 in selected townships in Naypyidaw, Karen State, Bago, and Mandalay regions without specifying which areas are involved.

October 2, 2023

Nyan Lwin Aung, a close associate and arms trader of the regime, was attacked in downtown Yangon. While having dinner at a food stall located on the corner of Anawrahta Road and 17th Street, a gunman opened fire at him around 10 pm. Initial reports indicated Nyan Lwin Aung had died shortly after the incident, but sources later reported that he was receiving treatment.

October 3 , 2023

The Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M) said that the United Nations could not provide sufficient support when the Myanmar public requested help, and only the regime’s violence accelerated two and a half years after the coup. SAC-M also pointed out that the humanitarian crisis is getting worse in Myanmar. A gunman opened fire at Siam Paragon mall in Bangkok, killing one Chinese woman and one Myanmar woman. The deceased Myanmar woman was identified as Ma Moe Myint, 31, from Thaton, Mon State who had been working in Bangkok for about a decade.

October 4, 2023

The NUG’s Ministry of Human Rights released that 491 children were killed by the regime’s attacks during the press conference. NUG’s Minister for Human Rights U Aung Myo Min said that the deaths of those under 18 were caused by aerial attacks, artillery shelling, and raiding villages by the military’s forces. About 119 schools nationwide were also destroyed by the military’s attacks.

October 5, 2023

More than 130,000 teachers continue their Civil Disobedience Movement according to the NUG’s Education Minister Dr Zaw Wai Soe. Initially, more than 200,000 teachers were on strike, and he added that CDM teachers are one of the reasons the military council is unable to run the country.

October 6, 2023

The regime’s Union Supreme Court announced that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s special appeals for six corruption cases were denied. These cases included four cases that are related to the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation and two cases related to businessman U Maung Waik.

In Bago Region, due to the heavy rain that started on October 7 and the three dams releasing water unannounced to control the spillover from the heavy rain caused a week-long of severe floods.

October 8, 2023

Data for Myanmar group reported on October 8 that a total of 1316 have been detained for criticizing the regime on social media. The data was collected between February 2022 to September 2023.

October 9, 2023

The Kachin Women Association Thailand (KWAT) published a report that claimed that the junta is putting pressure on the IDP camps in Kachin State and northern Shan State to close down in an attempt to make space for China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)-related development projects.

October 10, 2023

Local resistance forces launched a counteroffensive at the village police station in Hlataw Village, Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region. In the ensuing clash, eight regime personnel, comprising both soldiers and policemen, lost their lives. On the people’s side, three casualties occurred.

October 11, 2023

Rosatom, Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation, announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the regime’s Ministry of Science and Technology “in the field of nuclear infrastructure assessment and enhancement”. The MoU was signed by Dr Myo Thein Kyaw, regime-appointed Minister for Science and Technology, and Rosatom’s Director General Alexey Likhachev.

October 12, 2023

The All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF), Chin National Front (CNF), and Karen National Union (KNU) issued a statement in which the groups rejected the 8th anniversary of NCA and the military’s new form of governance. The joint statement also included the five shared political goals and demands including the goal to eradicate the military from Myanmar’s political landscape.

October 13, 2023

A confrontation erupted between the junta’s forces and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in Aung Gyar Village, Moemauk Township, Kachin State. The regime reportedly suffered significant losses, including Deputy Colonel Thet Aung Aung, who served as the commander of the Light Infantry Unit 103. A coalition of local resistance forces initiated an offensive against the regime’s military headquarters located in Ye Township, Mon State. The rangers launched three artillery strikes on the compound, where approximately 100 troops were stationed. The precise targeting resulted in at least five soldiers suffering critical injuries. In response, the soldiers retaliated by firing both artillery and gunshots indiscriminately into the surrounding neighborhood.

October 14, 2023

Over 15,000 residents from 11 villages in Sagaing Region’s Pale Township were reportedly displaced since the junta troops advanced into Pale Township. The troops successfully seized control of two PDF stations situated in Yelaekyun. While no casualties were reported, the regime forces reportedly captured various types of weaponry during the operation.

October 15, 2023

In the Kokang area, the military and the MNDAA clashed, and 16 people, including officers from the junta side, were killed and weapons were seized.

October 16, 2023

The CSO Nexus Consortium Tanintharyi announced yesterday that it will not participate in the AHCT (Area of Humanitarian Country Team) event to be conducted by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) due to its cooperation with the junta.

October 17, 2023

Following the Mong Lai Hket incident, ASEAN issued a statement condemning the military council for attacking civilians with bombs. The attack killed 28 civilians including 10 children and injured 57 civilians. A military base of the Arakan Army (AA) was also affected, one of its soldiers died and ten were injured.

October 18, 2023

The regime soldiers perpetrated a brutal murder in Larboh Village, Yinmabin Township, Sagaing Region, and subsequently arrested two other villagers to use as human shields. Approximately 200 troops conducted a raid on the village, and as they departed, a lifeless body was discovered.

October 19, 2023

A coalition of local resistance forces carried out an offensive against regime reinforcements using drones in Phyu Township, Bago Region. On the first day, approximately 40 regime soldiers came under attack from the sky as they entered Layeainsu Village, where at least four of them lost their lives.

October 20, 2023

Two separate battles occurred between the regime’s forces and the resistance forces in Ye Township, Mon State, leading to multiple casualties on the junta’s side, with nearly 40 soldiers losing their lives.

October 21, 2023

In the clashes that took place in Ye Township in Mon State, the Daw Na PDF announced that about 40 soldiers were killed and many soldiers were injured.

November 27, 2023

Sasakawa, the chair of the Nippon Foundation and the controversial Japanese ally of the regime, visited Nay Pyi Taw and discussed clashes in Rakhine and Shan-north during his 3-day visit.

October 22, 2023

The KNU Mudraw News reported that seven soldiers from the junta army were killed in the 4-day fighting in the area of the KNLA Brigade (5).

The End Of Dictatorship reports that the federal Federal San Yay housing project near the Pyin Oo Lwin Tatmadaw University of Technology campus received more than US$3 million for funding.

October 24, 2023

After prohibiting family visits for prisoners in Obo Prison for a long time, the prison management announced that in-person family visits will be allowed starting October 24 at the prison. Those who wish to visit their family members are required to provide six documents including proof of vaccination for two times, proof from the respective ward administration offices and police stations that visitors are free from criminal activities.

October 25, 2023

Chin ethnics opened war crime charges against the junta chief and nine others at the Philippines Court. Chin Human Rights Organization (CHRO) and Myanmar Accountability Project announced that these ten individuals committed the killing and decapitation of civilians, torching and destroying civilians’ homes and places of worship, and weaponizing the humanitarian aid items.

The junta revoked the passports of three Myanmar nationals living in Singapore in recent months. Between August and October, three Myanmar nationals who are active in anti-coup activities discovered that their passports were revoked while traveling in and out of Singapore.

October 27, 2023

Three members of the Northern Alliance announced Operation 1027 which is a coordinated offensive attack on the regime’s forces and its alliances People’s Militia groups in the northeastern part of the country. Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), Kokang’s Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), and Rakhine’s Arakan Army (AA) issued a statement in the early morning as the coordinated attacks took place about the same time.

October 28, 2023

U Ye Htut, a former Minister for Information in the Thein Sein administration and a long-time military loyalist, has reportedly been arrested by the regime in Yangon. He is said to have been charged with the sedition act 505A and is currently detained in Insein Prison.

October 30, 2023

The regime’s spokesperson General Zaw Min Tun told China’s Phoenix TV that ethnic armed groups from Wa and Mong La are involved in the growing online scamming groups in the Myanmar-China border. In coordination with Operation 1027 in Northern Shan State, the combined forces of KNU and PDF launched attacks on the regime’s forces in Karkareik Town according to Colonel Neh Dah Htoo of the KNU Brigadier (6) since October 27. After the three-day clash, both sides retreated but the regime’s forces launched artillery shells indiscriminately.

The regime’s troops launched heavy artillery at Mong Lai Hket and Laiza around 6:30 am. A displaced person told Myanmar Now that firing sounds and the sound of fighter jets were also heard from the Mong Lai Hket camp.
